Smoking habits during pregnancy
During pregnancy smoking is very dangerous. Most of the birth defect occurs due to smoking habit during pregnancy period. No treatment can permanently heal that defect if you don’t stop smoking during your pregnant period. Smoking habits during pregnancy raises the risk for birth defects that includes cleft lip, cleft palate, or both.
Know what is cleft
A cleft is a natural opening in lip or in the roof of mouth (palate). Surgery is the only treatment for birth defect. In addition speech therapy, dental care, psychiatric counseling also needed. Cleft is normally of two types cleft lip and cleft palate. It is normally results when facial structures that are developing in an unborn baby don’t close completely.
Complications of having a cleft:
1. Difficulty with feeding.
2. Difficulty in swallowing.
3. Nasal speaking voice.
4. Chronic ear infections.
Other effects of smoking habits include:
1. Insomnia to mother.
2. Burning sensation.
3. Loss of appetite.
4. Slow weight gain.
5. Abnormal bleeding during delivery.
6. Fetal distress.
7. Difficulty in breathing.
8. Cardiovascular disease.
9. Dry cough.
10. Pneumonia etc.
So better avoid smoking when you are pregnant to keep your baby protect on your belly. The risk of abnormal bleeding during pregnancy and at the time of delivery may result fetal and maternal death.
In case of lactating mother:
During the lactating period if mother smokes then you make your small one a passive smoker at all. From birth to six months baby usually spent their whole time with their mother and having breast milk exclusively (day & night) as breakfast, lunch and dinner. During all the time if the mother smokes it definitely affect the newborn. The newborn may have breathing difficulty, pneumonia group of disease and it also may affect cardiovascular system. The smoke can irritate skin and eyes of the newborn baby because all the body parts of a newborn baby are very delicate. To protect the baby on your lap you must avoid smoking during the lactating period also. To have a healthy newborn avoid the habit of habitual smoker and be a great mom.
