Positions to sit during pregnancy
Most of the times a pregnant woman sits normally by reading, watching TV, cutting vegetables, taking nap, eating, drinking, doing work and all. Wrong sitting posture may lead to severe back pain, leg edema etc. from the 2nd trimester when the belly moves towards diaphragm. Here some safe positions to sit during pregnancy.
Four safe sitting positions:
1. Sit up position:
Sit up with your back straight and shoulders back. Buttocks should touch the back of the chair always. This position reduces pressure on pelvic region.
2. Sit with back support:
Always sit with a back support e.g. lumbar roll or small rolled up towel placed on back. Sit at the end of the chair and slouch completely. This position did not harm your backbone and reduce the chances of back pain.
3. Whole body distribute:
Distribute whole body weight evenly on both hips. While standing this supports your belly from trauma.
4. Right angle with hip and knee:
Never cross your legs, feet should be flat on the floor. Always Keep your hips and knee at 90 o Foot rest can be used if you want to.
Four safe yoga positions:
1. Twisted pose (VAKRASANA):
Muscle toning yoga, benefits on lower back, uterus, abdomen, hips and kidneys.
2. Chair pose (UTKATASANA):
Stiffness relieving yoga, beneficial for spine, hips, hamstrings, shoulders and lower back.
3. Mountain pose (PARVATASANA):
Part of SURYA NAMASKAR, benefits from removing spinal defects and helps to achieve proper spine
position.
4. Butterfly pose (BHADRASANA):
Suitable for beginners, this practice calms the mind and develops brain power. Also eases delivery, labor during childbirth.
Does and don’ts:
1. Try to avoid sitting in a same position for more than 30 minutes.
2. Always stand up by straightening your legs first.
3. Avoid bending forward at your waist, produce tension on pelvis region.
4. Use a small tool on your washroom for a safe and comfortable sitting position.
5. Bend your knees if there is something about to lift.
6. Never wear high heels and full flat.
7. Always wear low heeled for feet support, these types of shoes prevents pressure on back.
8. Avoid prolonged standing.
9. Avoid crossing legs while sitting and try to point your feet at the same direction.
10. Practice some simple yoga steps instructed by yoga instructors.
